When Should My Child See the Dentist?

As a parent, one of your responsibilities is to ensure that every aspect of your child’s well-being and health is well taken care of, including his oral health.  One common question new parents ask is, When should my child see the dentist?”

We advise that parents bring their kids to a dentist before they celebrate their first birthday or within six months after their first tooth erupts! We believe in making infant and children’s oral health a priority to ensure happy and healthy smiles of the future!

Isn’t it too early? Nope, here’s why:

  • We recommend getting your baby in early so that we can progressively monitor the growth and prevention of tooth decay.
  • We provide helpful tips and answer any questions you may have that will allow you to take great care of your child’s teeth and gums while at home.
  • Introducing early dental visits allows for your child to learn that there is nothing to fear about visiting the dentist which, in turn, leads to stress-and fear-free visits in the future.

Preparing for the dentist, Parents we recommend:

  • Introduce the conversation of the dental visit days prior to the first visit appointment, this will reassure they are prepared.
  • Schedule your child’s dental appointment during an opportune time between naps and after feedings to ensure happy moods.
  • Prepare to be at our office for approximately 45 minutes, we recommend bringing your child’s favorite small toy for comfort and snacks if preferred.
  • Fill out & submit our patient forms digitally before arriving to save time in office.
  • Prepare a list of questions you may have, the dentist can provide advice on concerns about teething, sucking their thumb or using a pacifier.

What should you expect during their first pediatric dentist visit?

The goal of this initial visit is to introduce your child to our beachy fun environment while building trust and rapport between baby and dentist.

  • The parent will be in the exam room while doctor initiates a lap exam. This is where your child will sit on your lap, lay backward and gently place their head into the lap of the doctor.
  • During your first visit, the dentist will discuss medical history and examine your child’s teeth, gums, bite, and jaw.
  • In some cases, your child’s teeth may be cleaned.
  • Fluoride will be painted on teeth if desired.
  • Answer any questions parents may have.

We do not believe in the papoose!

This means, should your child become anxious or simply uncooperative, we will happily schedule a follow-up appointment. We like to always ensure our patients leave with a positive Surfside experience.

How often should your child visit your dentist?

Children should visit their pediatric dentists every six months or twice a year. However, there may be instances where your child many need to see your dentist more frequently.
