Frequently Asked Questions
When should my child see an orthodontist?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends kids have their first orthodontic screening no later than age 7. This consultation is a growth guidance appointment to review and educate families of the patient’s jaw structure and growth in preparation of treatment if needed.
How long does orthodontic treatment last?
Your specific orthodontic treatment time will depend on your individual needs. Treatment usually ranges from 12 to 30 months, with an average treatment time of 22 months with braces.
Can I play sports while wearing braces?
Yes, you will still be able to play sports and enjoy all of your normal activities while wearing braces. Our orthodontist recommends that you use a mouth guard for all sports to keep your smile safe.
Is it too late to get braces if I am an adult?
It is never too late to straighten your smile! In fact, approximately 25% of all orthodontic patients are adults. Dr. Derick Phan and our team will help you find the treatment you need to achieve a straighter smile.
Will I need to have teeth removed for braces?
In certain cases, it is necessary to extract teeth to achieve optimal results; however, thanks to the advanced orthodontic treatments now available, most patients will not need to have any teeth removed for orthodontic treatment.
